Hello there. I just bought my 1st 3D printer kit
« on: November 14, 2012, 12:26:18 AM »
Hi all,
Totally a newbie here and a noob at 3D printer. It has been probably 4 months ago till today I finally decided to purchase a 3D printer. After, research and research I wasn't completely sure to myself I'll be able to build one myself until couple of weeks ago. So, after comparing few site for price parts I say what the heck, I will just order a kit. hheheee.
So, today I bought a Huxley model through RepRapPro.
I would like to have some thoughts about this model and some pinpoints what I should be looking for when I begin to assemble this kit when it arrives. Thanks ahead.

I can't wait till this arrive. It's a Christmas present to myself.

Congrats! I got a Printrbot from their kickstarter, but didn't have the stomach for all those measurements and adjustments :(. JDBugman just got into 3d printing, and I've heard a couple others show interest!

3d printing rules.....

You are going to love it. There are a ton 9f people at the lab that know it. If you run into trouble let us know.

Once I get it, I will definitely post something on here. Oh yeah, I went to FamiLab's open house last week and saw John was demonstrating his 3printer and it was cool and pretty good idea of his to addon 2 fans at the extruder.

Yep, the RepRapPro mendel is better known as a Prusa Mendel i2.  It looks like they've got a bowden tube setup going on though, so you should be able to obtain a bit higher speeds than I'm able to obtain currently on mine.  It looks like it's a better deal than the makergear prusa.

They're rather easy to setup and maintain - just a bit of measurement to begin with, and you've gotta make sure bolts don't rattle loose :)

I didn't.  I started off self-sourcing every component.  I've not once ever assembled a kit.  If you're referring to OP, he got his from RepRapPro.

Cool, thanks. I would too source every single part but that would be tedious given that I have don't much experience, I promise however that my second printer will  be built part by part ( since I'll have a "parts maker!" woot woot and a model to go by  ;D ) btw which one of those at RepRapPro do you recommend or think is the better one to get? Muchas Gracias.

That's one of the great things about being a part of FamiLAB; we have printers.  That can print stuff.  Sourcing wasn't all that bad to be quite honest.

As far as a kit, back when this original post was made - the Prusa i2 was a fine machine.  I couldn't recommend it anymore.  You definitely want to go with the Prusa i3.  The only place that sells a kit state-side is MakerFarm.  I cannot attest to the quality of this kit, but I'm sure it's just fine.  The only reason I'm reluctant to suggest them is because we (the reprap community) have had a hard time getting them to release the source for their files (the i3 is released under the GPL license, which requires all modifications to be released back to the public)...
