I need help with a 3d Model for Maker Faire
« on: August 05, 2015, 05:49:25 PM »
Hello world,

I've got a table at the Maker Faire, where I'll be showing off 3d papercraft (aka Pepakura), and my original thought was to print out basic polyhedrons for people to be able to cut, glue and take away.

After doing the maker orientation at the Science Center, I was thinking it would be a lot cooler to take the 3d model of the Make Robot:

and use pepakura to unfold it and make a printable paper robot.

I've unfolded this model, but it's too round and detailed to make a really good paper craft.   Is there anyone out there who could "dumb down" the curves and indention's, and make it more polygonal?

I've got it in SketchUp, and I'll do my best, but this isn't really my strong suit.

Cheers!
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I think that you want to make the model "low poly". I'm not the best with the 3d modeling software but I found this link which explains a direct approach.  I think you'll have to do some trial and error to get something that works for you. I hope this helps.

Cheers,
~Iggy

I might be able to help by making the model in Solidworks, if that's compatible?
I just need to know dimensions of what you want

Thanks!  I'm playing around with Blender, I'm still getting too many curves on the hands, but this is my first time trying it out.

Ideally, I'd make it so it was about 3 inches tall, 2 inches wide and about 1 1/2 inches deep, and I can adjust any model size in pepakura, (I could make a giant cardboard version, given a large format printer..)

I'll give it a try when I get home from work this afternoon, then leave you a link to a dropbox file.
What kind of file would you need? I can save in Solidworks, STL, etc.

I already have a SolidWorks model of Maky.  I am printing a 2" high figurine for Maker Faire for use as a casting master.  I can rebuild it without fillets.  I would have to talk to you to figure out what exactly you would like to accomplish.

You can see where I am at here
