We have been approved by the IRS for 501(c)(3) exempt status, official as of September 20, 2010.

Please consult your tax preparer for any impact on your current or prior year taxes.

Our determination letter is located here: http://goo.gl/xHzR9

I'll announce more about this and how it affects the organization in the coming weeks, however since it is tax season, I wanted this to be available immediately.

Original filing documents are all public and can be seen here: http://forums.familab.org/index.php/topic,638.0.html

Great reading if you are new to FamiLAB and want some history...

Our status is now reflected in the IRS except organization searchable database!

Link to the results:
http://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/pub78Search.do?ein1=273490023&names=&city=&state=All...&country=US&deductibility=all&dispatchMethod=searchCharities&submitName=Search

If you want to find us without a direct link, you start at the main search URL: http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Exempt-Organizations-Select-Check

Entering FamiLAB won't get you a result - because that is our DBA in Florida, our actual corporate name is Orlando Hackerspaces, Inc.

You can also search using our EIN which is: 27-3490023

I have nothing to contribute, I just want this image to show up here again.

We now have our Florida Sales Tax exemption letter. If needed, contact the treasurer.

Could we use this to make purchases for lab supplies and consumables? (Home Depot, Walmart, etc?)

Anyone that collects Sales Tax should allow us a mechanism to purchase items without sales tax.  I do not know the specific mechanisms (I'm guessing most will want you to have some nature of business account).

Sales Tax Exemptions are tricky with 501c3 .

Florida does appear to have a tax exemption for non-profits, however, items purchased MUST be used/for the organization.

If the item is later sold, or not used, the organization most likely needs to remit sales taxes.

i am not 100% sure on that ( i am not an accountant, nor do i want to be one, writing payroll software for 13 years kind of burned accounting out of my liking )

When I worked at a locksmith shop we had a lot of charitable organizations as customers. If they had a net-30 account we would keep a copy of their exemption letter on file, but otherwise they just had to show it to get the exemption and we would ring their purchase as non-taxable.

So, basically, my advice is that if you want to buy something for the lab you need to bring a copy of the tax letter.
