Annual Meeting - PLEASE BRING...
« on: September 20, 2012, 09:58:22 AM »
As part of the Annual Meeting, I'll be doing a presentation about FamiLAB - and I need some audience participation  :)

PLEASE BRING

  • ONE OR MORE (bring LOTS!) of your favorite FamiLAB memories in the form of a photo printed AT LEAST 8.5x11 size. If you know the date of the image, please put it on the back, or on a post-it. These can be of any FamiLAB member, FamiLAB thing, FamiLAB event, or anything you connect with FamiLAB.
  • ONE vision of the future of FamiLAB in the form of an image printed AT LEAST 8.5x11 size. If you need inspiration, just ask, but I'd like to see what you come up with without anchoring your thoughts.

No need to go crazy big with these images, but if you have the ability and want to go big, then have fun. Please keep them suitable for the general public / family-friendly. These photos will not be returned. If you don't have the ability to print, then you can link to it here, or send me an email with it, and I'll print them provided you don't flood me :)

Please get the word out about the annual meeting, and this request - if you are picking images, why not post them on Facebook, G+, HERE, etc and comment about them as we head into the annual meeting...

Just to get you thinking...here's a few of my favorites...

This picture was taken the first night I was in the new warehouse. I had Dan stand against a wall and I took a picture. It was so dark, I had to massively increase the brightness and contrast. Despite moving as far back as I could, and have him fully in frame, we still did not capture the ceiling, which is fitting. Dan co-founded the lab, and was just one tiny dot compared to what it has become. It's symbolic as we have had grown to a point where you could no longer comprehend the lab by focusing on one person alone. We no longer perceived boundaries, and had new resolve. Only looking back could we have comprehended the magnitude.

In homage to Carl Sagan, I call this "Pale Blue Dan." It works on so many levels.  ;)

This picture was taken about a week after we first moved into the new warehouse. Bill had work to do for his job, and was hellbent on getting it done. At the same time Michael King started to sand down what was left of some bolts sticking out of the floor. Despite the loud noise, Bill was committed! I then looked over and couldn't believe what I saw. Sparks were flying off of Bill's jeans, and he was none the wiser. That's when I took this picture. It was an amazing scene.

No, these aren't geeks playing Dungeons and Dragons. At the February 21st, 2012 open house a  few members convened at a giant bread board table, and started building circuits as though they were Legos.

Seven people playing Sega Saturn Bomberman on a single 27" CRT TV at "Retro Video Game Night" February 11th, 2012.

*Fun Fact: This was Jamie Szafran's first time at the space. After the event, she decided to stick around for "a few minutes" to check out "Sunday Morning Code" and lived up to FamiLAB's name and stayed past 4AM, despite living in Titusville. She reluctantly decided to join, despite the long drive, and now is helping build rockets, and is a nominee for the Board of Directors!*

*Also, to the far left is Megan Sarsany. This was Megan's first event at the space as well. She went on to help plan, organize, and volunteer at Orlando's first Mini-Maker Faire, 2012!

I went to Walmart to get ingredients for a Key Lime Pie. I invited along Tom Long and Robert Dziekan. Walmart didn't have key limes, but for the next 4 hours I was forced to wait as Tom and Rob would run around the store literally going though cleaning products looking for chemicals to be isolated for smoke bombs for Mini-Maker Faire. They also went to the toy section and began playing with the bouncy-balls, and 3d glasses, and commented how much more "3-d" the glasses made the world. I Also witnessed a very naive and unembarrassed Tom ask an employee if they had sex lube as he wanted to isolate the glycerine.

Anthony Morris believing we would be returning to the lab in minutes, not in 4 hours left afraid that we may have gotten into an accident.

This picture is the result at the end of the night.

On May 19th, 2012 while on our way to watch SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket attempt to launch cargo to the ISS, we came across a rather flat sandal in a parking lot. Dan Lewis, and John Cope began to reverse engineer the shoe in an attempt to use the design to make their own laser cuttable shoes. Robert Dziekan looked on as I provided illumination in amusement.

BTW, Ian, the images above I already printed on a nice color laser printer. :)

I needed to throw this in. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to print it. Thanks, Mack. ;)

Another from the Retro Video Game Night. We took raffles for some $10 gift cards that was donated for the event from Game Trader. The first number called was for Dan. I was actually embarrassed as it seemed the odds went in our members' favor more often than not, and I was worried people would think the raffle was rigged. As the saying goes, "Chance Favors the Dan Lewis."
