FamiLAB Promotion - BarCamp & Dark Sky Festival
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:45:18 AM »
We are working to promote FamiLAB and Orlando Mini Maker Faire at BarCamp and the Harmony Dark Sky Festival - both are Saturday, April 14th

Barcamp (http://barcamporlando.org/) is from 9:30 to 6pm

Harmony Dark Sky Festival (http://www.darkskyfestival.com/) is from 6pm to 11pm

We are working to setup a table at both events where we will show off some fun stuff (3D printer, 3D printed stuff, lasercut stuff, tennis for two, an arduino project or two, etc)

If you have time on the 14th and want to help (hang out and talk to people), please contact me.

How ventilated are these places?  Mine is up and running very nicely but I've been using black ABS from the lab.  You know the issue with ABS. :)

A shelled pink panther lady wouldn't use much filament, maybe a couple of vases as well.  My printer is also quite portable at the moment.  It's just pick it up and go.

Barcamp is indoors, not sure how good the ventilation will be...we can always stop if its an issue, and have some already printed stuff to show...

Dark Sky festival is outdoors, so ABS isn't a problem...

I can come with the BreepBroop. It's working mostly, i have plenty of filament, and in theory i can print all day. Maybe two would be better. (in case one breaks down)

I won't be able to stay the whole day.  Do I have to sign up beforehand, or is that taken care of under the "Familab" banner?

Well, we did it, and I think it went well. The 3D printer was a definite attraction and people of all backgrounds and ages were coming over to see what we were doing and what we were about. Lots of interest in OMMF, and the guy who was handling some of the people-wrangling was just yelling to get people's attention, so I printed him out a whistle which worked great! I printed a few more out Dark Sky afterwards, looking forward to hear how that went!

Dark Sky was great, although I was crazy tired - lots of kids with parents. Quite a few came over because of the kids, then got interested once they heard the story. Given the location, not much interest in coming out to the lab, but I know we got some attendees for OMMF... once guy walks up in a trenchcoat covered in EL wire and tape, I bet we see him soon :)

We had one kid (maybe 6) that asked non-stop questions. I finally gave him the prize for asking the most questions - A 3D Printed WHISTLE! - I'm sure his parents hate me.

When we aren't out pimping OMMF, we should do some events out in the community representing FamiLAB - the 3D printer is a big hit, and lots of interest in Arduino and classes.

Chris, thanks for the banner - we hung it at the back of the tent - and it looked AWESOME...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXjs-wfu5Ag

Damn I wish I could have made it to this... 1 kid 80% done with flu + 1 kid 20% done with flu = me going nowhere.

How dark was this "dark sky" out of curiosity?  I haven't seen the milky way in over 10 years... I miss the old girl.

The sky was very dark with clouds :(

They are moving the event to February next year which makes a LOT more sense...
