Many of you are FamiLAB members (or Friends of FamiLAB) because of the FamiLAB mission...
FamiLAB is a community that fosters learning and creativity through hands-on projects, collaboration, and the sharing of skills & tools to improve ourselves and enrich the world around us.
I personally LOVE the way in which FamiLAB seeks to "improve ourselves and enrich the world around us" - but it isn't the only way.TEDxOrlando, run by FamiLAB member Dave Casey, and his wife Jenny, approaches this same goal, but from a different angle. They provide a platform that shares - "riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world" - another of their taglines is "Ideas worth Spreading". Now, while the talks are shared for free online, there is a substantial cost in producing the event, video taping, editing, etc. - not to mention getting some world class speakers to Orlando.Dave & Jenny make this happen by taking the financial risk upon themselves (as they also helped do with Orlando Mini Maker Faire) - and while they are very gracious to do so - none of us can afford to lose money on these events. Here's my ask - if you believe in the sharing of knowledge - and in improving yourself, and enriching the world around you - please take one or more of the following actions:
Oh, BTW, I'm speaking at the event
- Buy a ticket at www.tedxorlando.com - They are quite cheap compared to a professional conference, but at the same time not inexpensive. Ticket sales are needed to keep this event happening every year. PLEASE don't wait until the last minute. Buy them now, and if something REALLY bad happens, call me, I'll work to find someone to buy it from you.
- Get the word out - Social media is inexpensive and REALLY helps. Share the websites, share a blog post, mention that you are going, ask who wants to join you. These little actions are an amazing form of community support. There are also big postcards - get some from Dave or me (there should be some at the lab too - if not, let Dave or me know)
- If you know ANYONE (Company / Organization / Individual) that might want to sponsor the event, please let us know. I'm happy to give you tips on pitching sponsorship to an employer, local business, etc.
, don't let that stop you from coming... while I will be talking about science, and FamiLAB is in my bio, I am not speaking about Making or Hackerspaces. If you want to know more about my talk, contact me directly.
Thank you for all your support!!!
