laser diode and driver questions
« on: January 09, 2014, 01:28:02 PM »
Hello all,
I have a blue laser diode and driver from aixiz.  the diode has 3 pins in the back and the driver diagram doesn't show me where to connect the positive side from the power source.  I'm also trying to figure out which pins connect to the connections on the driver.  any help will be appreciated

Based on the pictures, it looks like you're referencing this kit from aixiz. I'm not an expert on electronics (nor lasers), but my interpretation is to use those boards in series and put the second board in parallel with the battery. This is a homemade LM317 Laser driver I found online, and it appears to be using the LM317/capacitor/diode to regulate current and voltage to the diode. Thus, if I'm understanding the pictures on the kit's webpage listing, I belive that the circuit should be wired as such: http://i.imgur.com/0ODKcWo.png
I'm unsure as to whether or not that blue line is correct, as it would be needed to complete the circuit but I'm not sure exactly where it should connect.
I'd highly recommend contacting Aixiz to inquire about the driver's recommended circuit diagram and proper use before trying to use the laser in a circuit with just my input, as you probably don't want to fry it..   :(

I was going to recommend wiring your own driver for the laser, as there appears to be a plethora of homemade drivers online. I'm actually going to try and wire a couple red lasers using LM317 Laser Driver circuit myself, so I'll relay any findings I make back to you.  :)

I have a couple of drivers similar to this and if I remember correctly, they are intended to be placed inside a housing. The left side that has the three solder pads connect to the diode LD+ LD- and the battery positive B+. The other end that has the spring would contact the battery negative. One of the wires coming from the diode you aren't going to use. I looked at my diode and it looks like I used the RED/BLACK and didn't use the WHITE.

Hope that helps,

I agree, on the diode you won't need the 2nd pin (case)  just use diode pins 1 and 3, use your multi meter to check the ma on the LM317 to make sure your not exceeding the diode limits. It might not be nessacary as you purchased as a kit, but its better to check than not.
