Ultimaker
« on: July 08, 2013, 09:46:00 AM »
I received an email from MakerShed and found that the sell the ultimaker for 1700 with the ulticontroller. The printer is cheaper and so is shipping.  Any thoughts on ordering this from MakerShed versus Ultimaker?

Do want. I'm reading a few bad reviews of maker shed customer service on Google, but nothing that should affect you. Do we get a makerspace discount from anyone who sells the ultimaker? Dave Casey would know.

Mini Maker Faire producers get a discount on select items, the UltiMaker is not on that list :(

That's a shame. We'll still be lauding them wholeheartedly, as I love that thing.

Also my dad's company is now an official Arduino distributor, and Jaycon Systems is down here in Melbourne, they might be good to talk to.

Do you think it's worth talking to them? Maybe if we order like 5 of them they'd make a deal. Between two spaces now, that's not as out there as it seems. Could also see if Tampa or Tallahassee want in.

If you're just taking about companies to contact for donations of gear, Tektronics has an office in Orlando off of Semoran Blvd.

Gadget,  Thats a great idea. I plan on buying one in the next two weeks. So if you can get pricing on a bulk buy we can ask around for who can commit to that price.

I didn't get to call the Ultimaker people today. However, I met the owners of Jaycon Systems here in Melbourne and they said there's a local 3D printer designer they're really impressed with. And they have a professional quality 3D printer, so they should know.

I will try to check that out in the next couple of days. But I will also call the Ultimaker people anyway, to see all the options.

I talked to the guy in Melbourne today. his name is Sunni. The name of his company is Maker Coast. No website yet, but he plans to have it up in time for Maker Faire.

He currently has two designs ready now - a Prusa-style and a Printrbot style. He has made modifications of his own to each of these designs. For the Prusa style, he added an additional brace to it that significantly reduces the wobbling inherent in that design.

I've attached some pictures of output from his Prusa-style printer. In the pictures, the smooth part is just with rough sanding and painting. I also attached a picture of the inside before sanding.

The Printrbot also has added bracing, plus some minor mods to zeroing on the axes, and adding switches to the plastics themselves.

Sunni said his turnaround time is 2 weeks per printer, and the kit price is $520. The assembly, ready to go, is an additional $150 plus another day or two. I can arrange delivery, or you can pick it up in Melbourne.

He also is developing two additional designs - an Ultimaker-style, and a Delta-style, these should be available in the next couple of months.

He hopes to have a Delta style available by October. The advantage of Sunni's delta-style design is that you never have to level the plate. It also will print very tall prints (6-12" cubes). When they're ready, they will be sold assembled. The 6" square will be $799 and the 12" square will be $1199.

I sent emails to Makerbot and Ultimaker but haven't heard from them yet.

Gadgetkat,
Did you ever hear anything back on the bulk discount?

I sent them a message but haven't heard back. Their wiki says they're currently selling every kit they make. If they're saying stuff like that, I suspect it's unlikely they'll offer a discount.

Was worth a shot and I'll keep an eye out. For now though,  I think your best bet is to buy one from the manufacturer.
