xbee mesh network to wifi
« on: July 01, 2013, 09:13:38 AM »
Hi all,

I am about to order some xbee modules with an intent to create a mesh network which I then want to upload the accumulated files to a mysql db on the web. Has anyone had any experience and be willing to share it with me? I eventually will figure it out myself but I imagine this will be the more expensive path to a solution.

I've not done it, but this is the book that gets mentioned whenever the topic comes up - http://www.amazon.com/Building-Wireless-Sensor-Networks-Processing/dp/0596807732

im confused, Xbee != WiFi , its a Serial Network, as i have used xbee's a lot (i have several of them).

And what Accumulated Files?  files don't have anything todo with xbee?

are you planning on building a Sensor network with one centralized unit to post data to a webpage that will save data into into a mysql database?

think of it as a "Wireless" RS422 network.

If I had to guess what he means is "I'll use the mesh network to gather data, which will then be uploaded over a separate wifi module."

Yes that is what I mean. I will have six to eight sensors deployed, all within xbee range, I then would like to gather that data to an master which will post it to a web db. I was looking at the mini-swarm and (in my relative ignorance) it seemed like a wonderful way to package the whole thing but it won't be available till fall (if delivered as currently promised).

xbee will work fine, i am trying to have a demo of them at the mini maker / osc event.

I have 3 modules, and have to second the book Ian posted. You can do it a few ways. Have an XBee module attached to a PC, use the XBee Gateway device, or gather the data to one node and then move it on SD or some other kind of storage.

There are some Pi + Xbee tutorials out there as well... the Pi would give easy networking capability, and there is a Pi Xbee shield reducing the amount of wires flying around...  http://tinajalabs.wordpress.com/2012/09/02/raspberry-pi-as-an-xbee-wireless-sensor-network-gateway/

i think arduino pro has better network ability :P as can be a smaller stack, less code. , pi you need to deal with a full linux stack.

I think he meant for data collection. Arduinos for collection nodes, and Pi for home base. That'd be a perfect setup.

I've done point to point with a Pi and the breakout board, but haven't used the shield before.

in that case it would work good.
