Getting the screen printing machine running
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:37:08 PM »
Me and some friends are interested in running the screen printing machine (that we have thanks to Tom Long) to make posters and shirts and whatnot for local groups and bands and anything else that would want posters and shirts. The plan was to sell what we made and kick back 50% of whatever we made to the lab to cover space taken up and power used, and then split the other 50% amongst whoever helped with production.

I'd also really like to get cracking on making those FamiLAB shirts we have screens for (thanks again Tom), and I think that screen printing shirts for marginally above at-cost on open-house nights could be an interesting and engaging way to stick in visitors' minds and maybe get a few more members who would enjoy and use the space.

The friends that are interested in screen printing are some art friends who have come by to the last two open houses and visited the lab a few times and are interested in being part of the lab as an artspace.

I'm setting up this thread as a way to keep track of myself, Tom, and the others if they'll join and keep the printing discussions in one place.

I'd like to see the screen printing rig operational too, as opposed to just taking up space.  We need a sink, and a dedicated outlet for the dryer portion of it.  We could use a darkroom, but could maybe get by with a "dark tent".

Bob C and Dave Woods have been working on the electrical.  We have a plan in place to wire the lab, and will execute it soon, and it includes a dedicated outlet for the screen printer.  See this RFC.

Tom already donated a utility sink.  We have some plumbing to do.

Both electrical and plumbing need the approval of our landlord.  Fortunately he's a member =)

If you have an idea about how we can set this up, there's a stack of printouts of the floorplan in the admin office.  Grab one and sketch up what you think we need.

We don't actually need a dark tent. We can do like Tom did and just have a screen maker make the screens for us when we start out. I figured sink could be the hose at first. I'm hoping, with Tom's sage wisdom, that we can isolate what materials and resources are needed for the printing and cleanup of screens themselves, and what's part of the entire process. It looks like he just wiped down the screens after their use, and the sink wasn't used at all.

I'd like to 2nd this motion and get the printing machine making money for the lab.
Sink is needed for making screens.
We "can" make the screens in the bathroom as a dark room - but this is the suxx0r for everyone.
Screen printing could be a draw for new members too! - I've been told by more than one that they'd like to use it.

Let's put it on the docket for the monthly meeting and push forward eh?

Heh... Heh... Docket... Monthly meeting...

I'm free most afternoons and am open to any and all instruction on this machine.

We have the RFC forum for items like this -  the monthly meetings were too unwieldy and lots of people can't make it.

You can create an RFC thread, state what & why (which you've done already, but others may not have seen), and the things needed to make it happen.

I know that many lab / space mods are pending once the electrical is in - and that is in progress, so the timing is good.

Instead of the raising the issue at the monthly meeting, I'll just check the plans for the electrical and make sure there's a provision providing for the printer's curing oven. That should be the end of the issue. Is it a special high-power plug like a dryer or a boat or is it a normal plug? I remember someone murmuring over the power needs.

John "Hex" Carter would like to extend another hand to FamiLAB and have us screen print shirts as a backer reward for an already funded kickstarter he's running. What do we have to do to make the shirts? Do we have everything we need to hack together a burnt screen with his logo? This is the second request for FamiShirts I've gotten in the last week.

That's the plug we need - is that at the lab now?

As far as making this happen - my time is so divided right now that it's unlikely.
I don't even get a chance to visit the forums. But it needs to get done - we should bring this up on Sat at the yearly meeting.

If you guys provide the screens I can burn them for you. Only things is I have printing capabilities up to 11X17. If you keep it under that then I can do it.
