Ideally for a wide range of materials, but needs to handle lightweight/thin materials well.
(Rayon, T-Shirts?)

My input is I have the Brother Project Runway machine and have been very happy with it. At the Hack your Sewing Machine class in 2011, 3 of 4 people had the same one. It has a usb jack to upload embroidery designs, and I've found the mechanical parts run smoother and jam less than my previous $150-range Kenmore machines.

I haven't sewn much rayon but have found the needle thickness is important. Also trying different needles. Sewing heavier materials like denim, I actually had better luck using a -thinner- needle instead of a denim needle because it pierced the fabric easier. Fewer broken needles.

Jessica K might be good to talk to.

Candy has a Janome I purchased on Amazon - something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Janome-DC2013-Computerized-Built-In-Stitches/dp/B00B0FDITE/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1383595216&sr=8-5&keywords=janome

I'm sure she'd let you try it out for a few weeks if you'd like before you buy...
