3DPrinting Upgrades Crowdfunding!
« on: February 11, 2016, 04:40:13 PM »
We are on a crowd funding roll. The rotary tool, Simplify3D, and Vcarve in just a little more than a week!

Let's keep it up! The 3D printers are all due for some upgrades. We've been having issues with under extrusion with the Deltamaker and jams in the Luz and Ultimaker. The main goal would be to standardize all printers to a 1.75mm print head and include duel extrusion on the big printer.

Our stretch goal would to replace each of the hotends with E3D-V6 to allow members to print with exotic materials like ninja flex, FlexPLA, and FlexPolyester. Duel extrusion for the large printer and extra nozzles.

Our second stretch goal will be for experimental filaments that are much more expensive so members will be able to test the upgraded E3D-V6 print heads.

Please send whatever amount you would like to contribute to treasurer@familab.org via Paypal. Please put that it is for the 3D printing upgrades and we will keep track of our progress in this thread.

Main Goal $188.19

2 Lite6 Full Kit 1.75mm $36.18 each
1 Chimera Duel Extrusion 1.75mm $115.83

1st Stretch Goal $324.21
2 E3D-V6 Full Kit's $68.01 each
1 Chimera Duel Extrusion 1.75mm $115.83
2
Nozzle Fun Packs $36.18 each

2nd  Stretch Goal $456.63
Ninja Flex 1.75mm 500g $49.92
Flex-Polyester 1.75mm 500g $40.52
ColorFabb Woodfill 1.75mm 600g $41.98

We have raised $324.44!
Main Goal - 100% Funded!
1st Stretch Goal - 100% Funded!
2nd Stretch Goal - 71% Funded!

I went back and forth on whether to voice my opinion or not, but here goes...

I'm not sure I agree with including consumables, specifically filament, in the same crowd funding campaign as the equipment upgrades. Not to say we can't crowd fund that, but I'd feel more comfortable if consumables were funded separately. When it comes to filament, especially because of it's price, I think it's probably more fair for those folk using it to be seen carrying the cost for what they consume. The filament listed is approximately 36% of the stretch goal, or 26% of the overall campaign.

I still plan to contribute regardless of whether consumables are included or not, I just thought I would share how I felt in case there may be others who feel the same way.

Thanks for organizing this.

Cheers,

Aaron

I have to agree with airflem about the filament, it should come out of a different fund. also I don't think we are allowed to change/modify/upgrade the delta. it is on loan to the lab.

I don't see it as a problem as long as its only included as a stretch goal. If people don't want to donate beyond that point they don't have to, otherwise the option is there.

As a side note I purchase the last two rolls for the lulzbot and didn't have a single jam until we started using the spare rolls.

I think that is a very fair assessment! I just jotted down some consumables after the discussion on the #3Dprinting channel. I completely agree with having them seperate.

How about I remove the PLA's because those are plenty affordable for people to acquire on their own and we can have a second stretch goal to get some of the cool filament which is much more expensive to play around with with the new E3D-V6 extruders? I'll update the post accordingly and wait to hear everyone's thoughts on it. :D

@netadmindave we aren't messing with the DM, there is actually plans on bringing it to DM for an upgrade after @digitalman2112 talked with Bob! Not sure who is taking it over there but no one be spooked when they see the DM missing from lab. Should be updates on this happening in the #3Dprinting channel.

Thanks Breee for the Deltamaker update. Yes, Deltamaker will help us keep that machine in good running order, and (my opinion) is that the best way we can support Deltamaker is to keep it stock so that people considering a 3D printer know that a stock DM can perform really well.

Having a second stretch goal for the filament is probably a good solution. Lets address the hardware upgrades with the main and first stretch goal, then any extra can go to the second stretch goal. :)

Oh, I thought the stretch goals worked like tiers...we fill up the first tier, then continue on to the second and third tier. Am I wrong? I was just looking at the percentages listed at the top of the thread and it has me confused.

it is tiered but the percent is the total money raised to cost of the goal

Right, it is tiered and the percentage is how close we are to reaching that tier of crowdfunding! Sorry for the confusion. If we reach the 2nd stretch goal the other two goals will already have been funded 100%! ;D
