DIYBio Coordination
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:10:39 PM »
Hello all,

Who here is willing and available to put sustained time and energy into getting FamiLAB's DIYBioSpace off the ground? I understand that Dave Casey is currently in crunch mode, so as he's been the guy I've talked to the most about getting things done I could use another contact or two.
We've got a simple, stable protocol for putting GFP into yeast that we're trying to enact, using the glowing yeast as a straightforward first product with which to attract more attention to the endeavor and hopefully base a class or two around. Higher-level stuff in the realm of high-throughput microfluidics platforms is also in the works which should make DIYBio cheaper and easier than it's ever been before.

So! If you've got some interest in establishing the space, please let us know. The sooner we get it off the ground the sooner it can grow :)

Dave graciously donated money, which will be matched by his employer, to build out the space to support an isolated bio hacking lab. What we really need help with right now is understanding the specifications and accommodations needed to have a proper lab built. Mike King (hybridsix) is working on the plans for that new build out, so he'd be the one to talk to. Obviously, its going to take time and undoubtedly more cash to get this thing off the ground, but its a start. Also, one of the new members who was just onboarded last meeting says he has supplies in NYC from his old space that, if we can find a way to transport them, he could provide to set up a basic bio lab here.

tl;dr we need cash, time, and plans.

Right on; do you have time for a quick chat (via Skype or otherwise) some time later in the week?

My apologies, been swamped this week. I'll be around for open house next week if that would work better, but honestly you'd have better luck with da3v and hybridsix. :)

There's also a thread in the member's only Request for Comment section regarding the build out where people are showing plans and such.
