KSC is Requesting Speakers from FamiLAB
« on: July 18, 2013, 10:08:01 AM »
In an interesting moment of turnaround, I got this email from one of the people behind KSC's Spaceport Innovators (thinking young'uns group, essentially :P ).  I'm thinking about speaking, and I know Ian was also asked to talk on Maker Faire, but I think it could be a lot of fun to get a group of us to speak. In return, we would get a private tour of KSC.  Please give it some thought and let me know (if you want to speak as a group) or email Josh (if you want to break out on your own).

Hi Jamie!
Do you know of anyone working in the FamiLAB (including yourself!) that would be interested in speaking at our upcoming Innovation Expo? I would especially like them to talk about the emergence of hackerspaces as places for grass-roots innovation and how folks can collaborate on projects without necessarily working within the same organization. Ideally, I am looking for someone with speaking experience and/or a dynamic personality that can engage our KSC folks.

Below is the basic email that I have been sending out to prospective speakers. Please forward to any of the FamiLAB folks you think would be interested and that you think might make a great speaker!
Cheers,
Josh

The NASA John. F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is organizing the 2nd annual Innovation Expo scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2013. The goal of the Expo is to nurture creativity and innovation at KSC.

One of the key events of the Expo is a series of Talks each lasting between 15-20 minutes that will collectively take the audience on a journey through innovation from inspiration to application and beyond!

We have divided the Talks into the following themes and are looking for potential speakers with expertise in these areas:
1.      Inspiration - Changing Your Perspective (stimulating and influencing creativity; how to think differently)
2.      Identification - Discovering Opportunities (finding areas ripe for innovation; identifying problems worth solving)
3.      Conceptualization - Generating Ideas (brainstorming techniques; methods for down-selecting ideas)
4.      Demonstration - Proving Possibilities (proof-of-concepts; rapid prototyping)
5.      Application - Becoming Reality (bringing ideas to market; technology spin-offs)
6.      Revelation - Changing The Universe (looking to the future; predicting new innovations)

We would like to invite you to be a speaker at this event and present a topic of your choice related to one of the themes listed above. In return, we will offer you a private tour of KSC including the new Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit!

Please let me know by no later than Wednesday, July 24, 2013 if you are interested in presenting at this event and which theme(s) interest you most.

See the attached flyer for a little more information about the 2nd annual KSC Innovation Expo events.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

I would very much like to represent Familab by speaking about in the theme of Inspiration. I am an TM advanced speaker and have been an inspirational speaker and trainer for more than twenty years. I am currently developing a keynote workshop series in conjuction with several experts in the field of diagnosed and undiagnosed ADD, ADHD and the lost understanding that along with the annoying aspects of the so affected individual is a host of positive behaviors and thought processing characteristics rarely found in "NORMALS".

I would not be speaking on that subject for NASA but offer it to illustrate that I am currently working in the field of public speaking.

I frequently speak and present workshops on "Positive Paranoia-Is it a delusion, a disorder or a decision about how you live in this world."

I am also a public speaking coach and will gladly support anyone who would like to speak but are unsure of your presentation skill. My experience is such that I generally employ the services of other speakers to evaluate and help me tweak and important speech I expect to present.

Les Mower,
"I just know that even people I haven't met are secretly plotting my success!"

Pretty sure Mike and I are in for FamiLAB along with a few others. Wonder if we could get all 7 board members in there with 3 lines each... hehe. :)

Of course I'm in, but I'm stating the obvious just to make sure everyone knows. :)

I told most of the board, but as a matter of public record, I'm in.

I'd like to speak about rapid prototyping possibilities when you have the proper tools available, but I'm guessing demonstration might be an oft-used topic, so if there's something else that might be a little more esoteric, I'd love to do that instead.

If no one minds, I think I'll coordinate the group reply to them on this.

I would consider speaking on the relevance of open source design tools and hardware for commercial applications. But, Most likely, I could say a few things about hackerspaces or familab in general. But, I could possibly do something with the group, or individually if I need to.

Well, you are welcome to put in as an individual speaker, if you want. I just thought a FamiLAB group would be fun and also be less pressure on any one individual to speak.

Okies, I think I'm going to stop the thread here, since we have a pile o' speakers to represent the lab. I'll let Josh know on Monday and see if he wants to give us two timeslots, perhaps, or what he wants to do with us as a group. :)

So we've got:
Jamie- I'm still picking :P I may end up trying to be the "glue" between the rest of you, though I've half a thought on Inspiration, m'self
Les- Inspiration
Bill - Still picking :P
David - Rapid prototyping or something more esoteric
Connor- The future
Mike- OSS/H for commercial applications
Pat- Rapid prototyping

The flyer, for anyone interested.  It's pretty sparse.

I'd like to volunteer for the FamiLAB group, possibly adding support (soluble HA!) to rapid prototyping presentation, or commercializing individual efforts.

Also, might have a demo of something cool by then.  :)

Hi all,

So, I've been talking back and forth with Josh and some others, and it turns out that the response to the call for speakers was WAY higher than they anticipated. Because of that, we're limited to 4 speakers and one 20-minute window. From my correspondence with Josh: "I don't think it should be an advertisement for FamiLAB but more or less on the process of innovating/inventing in a shared co-op space during your free time. You could talk about the general concept of a 'hackerspace' and then deep dive into a couple of cool projects."

After a LOT of discussion about the lab and who should talk, based on who was interested and who does what, we've come up with this idea- as the "NASA link", I'll take a minute to introduce the group (and later moderate time), then hand it off to Brooks (who contacted me by email with her interest) and Bill to discuss hackerspaces in general, FamiLAB vs. Melbourne Makerspace and how they aren't in competition but are in fact complementary. After that, David and Mike can talk the rapid prototyping and nifty projects that have started/been done at the lab.

I'm sorry that there's not enough space for everyone to talk; no one anticipated how quickly the slots would fill up! But they held one for us and our multiple speakers. :)  And Les, Pat, and Connor- I'm/we're open for suggestions/help with the parts of the talk/etc.

If everyone is amenable, I'll send in the required information today/tomorrow.

Cheers,
-Jamie -(-*
