Selfstarter.us Kickstarter-esque Funding Platform
« on: October 17, 2012, 01:27:16 PM »
This came out a while ago

http://selfstarter.us/

and it seems like people are interested in using it.

I am pretty familiar with Rails and Rails deployments, so if anyone wants to use this platform for funding, just ask me and I'll help you get it set up for your project.

The platform is one-deployment-per-project. This is not a replica of Kickstarter as a service, we have to deploy a full website per funding project, so I'm not going to just set it up, because it wont' become a service you can just tap into and start using whenever you want funding. I will, however, help anyone who wants to set one up.

Other notes:

* Kickstarter's 30-45 day pending period is not purely a Kickstarter invention. It is a limitation of the Amazon Flexible Payment Services reserved payment feature. This is how they accomplish 'all or nothing' donations, without needing to beg all the pledges to pay up after the fact.

* We can use other payment methods, like paypal, wepay, stripe, google checkout, etc, but it will require a modification to the software.

* Again, the software only supports 1 project. The configuration, images and text, for the project goes in config/settings.yml

* I would suggest not running multiple funding projects at the same time, if we're going for the 30-45 day funding period. If it's a long-term funding goal, multiple projects make sense, but those are a bit of a downer because they may take over a year to fund them that slowly, and may never get fully funded while still taking peoples' money.

I mentioned this when I saw it, but I think this would be a great mechanism for us to fund large projects and stuff for the lab.

Yes, this would be a good tool for collecting donations. I want to emphasize it does not replace the administration of a funding campaign. A lot of the boring stuff still has to be taken care of :p. This is a valuable financial tool for your funding projects.
