Unwanted Guests
« on: May 06, 2013, 03:09:36 PM »
So recently my back yard has become a bit of a hotel for a few suburban creatures. I have squirrels living in my attic and a few snakes that have decided to take residence in a small hole in the wall of my house. Last night I came home to a raccoon attempting to burrow into my roof near where the squirrels nest, now there is a big mess of insulation and other roof materials.

Does any one have some clever ideas on how to remove these animals from my home with out killing them. I am not one for killing animals that are simply trying to find a place to live.

If you call the county animal services, they're likely to set up several no-kill traps outside with yummy bait outside of your house in several areas. They usually then take these captured animals out to a safe area and release them.

I had unwanted guests enter my garage in bonita, due to an opening in a side door I was working on. They kind of took over the place. I bought some of these ultrasonic pest devices, and when I had them safely driven out, I finished the door.

If you go the ultrasonic route, there are a ton of small cheap ones that I don't think work too well. The one I suggested is pretty beefy and it worked for me.
I found it at either the Depot, Lowes or Ace, don't remember which, maybe they still carry it. Hope this helps.

I have a raccoon trap.  It does not harm the animal.  I could bring it to the lab tonight.  I also had raccoons and squirrels in my attic.  The most important thing to do is close up the openings, preferably with the critter outside.  I called critter control on the raccoons and they investigated and said we did not have any.  Later that day I went up into the attic and shined a flashlight on a mother and 2 babies.  The next day I saw her hauling a baby away.  After she was gone I put hardware wire on the roof vent where they were getting in.  Problem solved.

For squirrels, peanut butter in a Hav-a-Hart trap worked well for me, but you have to figure out where they're coming in or they'll be right back.

I left the trap at the lab next to the laser cutter.  I would like it back when you are finished.  I put my name and email on it.
