Want to build a race-car simulator?
« on: October 28, 2012, 06:25:33 PM »
I'm scrambling to get a number of other things done before a trade show so wondering if any of you would like a quick job -- build me a race-car simulator, similar to this... http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2008/03/07/gamers-cockpit-gt3_48.jpg .

It's fairly straightforward, but my time is seriously limited currently:
(a) Build frame (8020 T-slot framing).
(b) Add seat
(c) Mount controls and pedals
(d) Mount monitor (single for now)
(e) Mount speakers.
(f) Install PC components
(g) Install game ( http://www.lfs.net/ )
(h) Write quick python script to interface game data to serial port
(i) I will add dash with custom electronics after that.

Catch is that we have ~2 weeks to get it functional, with maybe an extra week for touch-ups/tweaks.

I got hung up on (h), but have figured it out now, so all should be straightforward.

Any takers?  PM me if interested.

Talk to Pat (P47), he's the man for this job. I'll also email him to make sure he's aware...

So time became an issue and I dropped it for that event, which ended yesterday.  The basic sim was the first stage goal for the event, but yes, I intend to build it as a full-motion sim later.  I should be getting back to it within a month or two.

Mack and I ended up at the PRI show yesterday, and I remember thinking - "I wonder if Neil is here"...wish I'd made the connection sooner.

There were 2 nice simulators there - I want one :)

I was there for all three days, but yesterday I took a few hours to run around the show and meet some people.  Did you stop by this booth?...

No, we didn't get to the entire show floor. I saw another gauge booth which helped trigger my memory that you were likely there.
