Interactive Arduino Display for the Orlando Science Center
« on: July 08, 2012, 10:05:53 AM »
I'm pitching the Orlando Science Center to create an Interactive Arduino Display that would be in the hallways at OSC. They have one for Kinect, I think there should be an Arduino one right next to it.

My pitch is that we'd work with them to create the display concept, the electronics, the code - and they'd likely build the cabinetry, signage, etc. We'd propose that the entire design including cabinetry be Open Hardware / Software.

I believe this to be good outreach for FamiLAB - and another step in building a great relationship with OSC. We'd get a mention on the display, and likely mention that we have Arduino classes so that they can learn more.

I created this thread to get your feedback (do you like the idea? Are you interested in helping?, etc) and your concept ideas. (What would be shown, how would it be interactive?)

I'd assume the display would be approx 5ft tall by 4 feet wide based on some other ones that are there.  If you really like the idea and are interested, I could setup a time to go check out OSC and brainstorm ideas while looking at their other displays.

The OSC mission & vision are below if that helps with the concept ideas.

Mission
Inspire science learning for life.

Vision
To be the community partner that fosters creativity and curiosity for science which stimulates innovation that transforms our economy and enhances lives.

I'd like to get in on the User Experience and design half of this. I'd love to be involved in a project that gets kinds cursing at semicolons and burning their fingers on soldering irons.
I like colors.

Raspberry Pi with a small LCD, keyboard, etc., running a locked down Linux and the Arduino IDE.  Allow reprogramming the display on the fly.

Thanks for the quick responses. I have an email into the Science Center to get their agreement to build it.

Keep the ideas coming and I'll let you know when they want to move forward.

Hell, even if they don't, a tabletop version would be awesome to take to events...

I have this old project I wrote up a while ago. It's a rat-maze for humans based on arduino. I never built the full thing, but it's supposed to have 3 walls that you can touch to choose to go in that direction through the maze. I wanted to add some animations for turning/walking.

I'd be interested in making it for OSC if people think it's a good enough idea to represent the lab.

We've been invited to participate in Otronicon (Jan 13) - that would be a really cool interactive exhibit concept!

I'm in to help with Otronicon -- working to get the Arduino 102 Class together for it.
