Jamie's first laser-cut anything
« on: July 15, 2012, 11:46:24 AM »
Okay, fourth try's the charm, right?

So, as I explained to a handful of people, I signed up for Reddit's Arbitrary Day 2012, a 'secret santa' style gift exchange.  My giftee had just moved and wanted furniture, art, etc. and listed a few of her interests (including nature-y stuff, music-y stuff, etc.).  So I decided to make a piece of laser-cut abstract art.  (Yes, I know that the word "art" is an exaggeration, but let x be an element of the set of art and let's move on. :P )

I made up a composite image in GIMP (which was what took the longest to do, really), opened it in Inkscape, and printed it to SVG.  Into the laser cutter, with a piece of scrap wood, and out a long time later comes a nice deep cut (thanks to a newbie mistake!).  I decide to keep it, and while I'm sanding it, ThantiK is playing with putting non-tempered glass in the cutter.  He makes an etch of my image in glass, which he gives to me and I decide to use with the wood piece.

This is the final product, cut out of the glass, glued at a slight offset, and mounted and framed.  The bottom edge of the glass is a little jagged, but I was unable to get the cut cleaner/closer with just the glass cutter at my house.  It gives it... character?

Thanks to ThantiK, waterbury, simply7, IzzyDranik, and Hybridsix for their help. :)  I've leveled up to Laser Cutter 2 and Glass-Cutting 1. *g*

And since I have no use for the glass cutter and cut-running pliers at my house (except to break my glass tables), I'll be bringing those in on Tuesday (along with a little scrap glass for practice) to donate to the lab.

Edit: herp derp, 4 tries and I land it in the wrong sub-forum.  (9_9)

It looks great!  And yes, the wavy glass gives it character. :)  Your giftee should be plenty happy with this.

I am learning to process image recently, but I do not know how to print my image to SVG vector image format. Can you give me more details?
