Power Racing Series - Orlando Mini Maker Faire
« on: March 20, 2012, 06:57:56 AM »
At the February meeting, we approved spending up to $500 for a group build of a Power Racing Series vehicle for Orlando Mini Maker Faire.

Learn more about Orlando Mini Maker Faire here: http://www.orlandominimakerfaire.com
Learn more about the origin of the Power Racing Series here: http://powerracingseries.org/ with some great pics and video here: http://powerracingseries.org/media/
The page for the exhibition race at Orlando Mini Maker Faire is here: http://powerracingseries.org/media/

With the move of the event to the Fairgrounds, we have some great space for a track AND we found a source for the tires to use to line the track.

John Soucy has taken over the race (from the Orlando Mini Maker Faire side) - but we need people to get involved building vehicles for the FamiLAB team. As I mentioned earlier, FamiLAB members approved building a car (up to the $500 race budget limit)

In order to get the process started, I brought in three Power Wheels vehicles - a disney princess car, a harley motorcycle, and a Kawasaki 4 wheeler. (Yes, we approved building one, but I got three so we'd have something to choose from - FamiLAB teams can build all three for some intraspace competition :)

Brooks donated an electric scooter, and I'm working to get some golf cart motors.

Pics from the first night we had the car: https://picasaweb.google.com/105910259363207016975/FamiLABPowerRacingNewWheels?authuser=0&feat=directlink

and of course this one if my fav...

John and I are also trying to get us some competition - any individual, group, or business can participate - they just need to register and get started. If you can get someone interested, they can let us know by emailing info@orlandominimakerfaire.com, or by contacting John Soucy (or me if needed). We plan to build a specific form for Power Racing entrants on the Power Racing page of the Orlando Mini Maker Faire site, but we haven't done it yet :)

Everything is in pieces right now. The biggest things (IMHO) are getting new motors, power supplies, reinforcing and decorating the cars. I'm not well versed in anything over 5v, but I'm sure we can figure it out.

We are 8 weeks from race day...scheduling some build days and getting them on the calendar would be a good way to get things moving if someone is inclined to help organize...

I actually see the motorcycle as the best option we have.  It's already largely in the form factor of the scooter, we just need to mesh the two together.

If more funds (past the lab budgeted amount) would lead to multiple cars, and someone has the passion, we can figure out how to get it funded...

I'm not sure who's managing the total funds for this project, but I bought three 24v motors at skycraft for about $22. I could get some nice tires too. I vote for just buying relevant stuff and making it happen. One way or another. The only way I'd be embarrassed is if we had nothing to show. A vehicle that moves 10 feet and catches on fire would actually be awesome by hacker standards. :)

I got some parts together for the power racer Axel, tires, wheels, sprocket and some more Aluminum for reinforcing the car.  I will be up there today at 7 to get started on the axel mounting and such, any help would be great

Bob -

I'm going to be down in Miami on a shoot this Saturday  :(

I did come in and get some measurements of the hood and the rear of the car so I can start working on enclosures for the countermeasures.  I've also got a design for a rack of 4 spring loaded foam missiles for the front, and I'm toying with the idea of a one-shot air powered mini-marshmallow shotgun.

I did not see the steering wheel laying around in the bits, are we even using the stock steering wheel?  I think that the buttons to launch the countermeasures will probably end up on the wheel rather than having some back of switches somewhere else. A James Bond style panel with toggle switches and blinking lights would definitely look cooler, but be much harder to activate in an actual race than a Speed Racer style center-of-steering-wheel button array.

I'll be in the Lab today finishing up the tape roll holder I'm making for the pegboard, I will look around for the wheel again.

I think the steering wheel will work but will need a little beefing up.  I got the PR to the roller stage. The motor, controller, rear sprockets, accelerator and charger are in.  I'll be in tue and was wondering  if anyone has any ideas for lights for the body we can run it off a seperate 12v smaller battery.  Maybe an indash DVD player would be cool
