CNC Router Tutorial

Hi all,


Because I figured that Pocky would eventually tire of showing me how to use the router every time I needed it (and because I don't use it frequently enough to remember everything), I did a quick braindump when I got home after the last time I used it. Thinking that it might be helpful to others, I ran through a test cut from the beginning, taking pictures and screenshots and fleshing out my notes.


So!  We have a quick and simple router tutorial.  My thanks go to Pocky for helping/editing.  If you find any obvious errors, or want me to add something, please let me know. I'm linking to the published gDrive version, but will make edits and republish as needed.

This is good.  Thanks for putting it together.


I have a comment on the following step.
32) Place your material/piece on the router bed and clamp it down. Tighten the clamps very tightly, as tightly as you can finger-tighten them without damaging your material.

[/size]32 a ) Be sure to use scrap wood to hold your work piece up from the CNC Press Board Bed.  Otherwise the cutter will cut into the bed.

I would like to add something to Atomics' statement. You want the piece under yours to be roughly the same size that way when you clamp it, your piece will not bow up ( changing the depth required to cut your piece)

Be sure to clean off any sawdust under your piece and the clamps before you cut. My last piece was ruined as the wood shifted in the sawdust.

Would it be possible to create a pocket cut and within that pocket cut have a non-pocket cut area. I want to make a sign with letters sticking out of a small area.

I think it can be done... I'll tinker with Cut2D for a bit to check.


*edit: after tinkering wtih cut2d for a little while, I was able to generate the attached image. To do it, you just need to select both the outer border and the inner text vectors when creating the profile toolpath (as seen in the other image)


Let me know if you need any help making it work  :)

Now if I can find out why illastrator can't convert to a proper dxf i'll be pratically done.

Can you give me a tutorial of creating image? And can I generate tiff image?

Daniel, are you referring to rastering a TIFF image? In that case, most programs (Inkscape (free), Illustrator/Photoshop/etc) have image tracing functions, which use the boundaries of colors to generate a vector line, which Cut2D then reads to generate GCode. So, all you need to do is use image tracing either in inkscape, illustrator, or other programs you can find via google :) . Inkscape is free and I've used it (and the page I linked to) to make vectors traces for use with the laser, and shouldn't be too hard to import into Cut2D for use with the 4x4 CNC.


Note: For inkscape, it appears that it's DXF exporter is.. not too compatible with Cut2D, as the newest revision of inkscape uses a newer DXF standard, which Cut2D has difficulty interpreting. However, if you export the vectors as an EPS file from Inkscape and import that EPS into Cut2D, it will work. [EPS worked with the Full Spectrum Laser we used to have as well, and it should work with the new Epilog coming in]:

"The esp files seem to work as long as I don't use transparent lines. Just to be clear it's not cut2d's issue with transparent lines. This is how inkscape exports transparent lines in formats that don't support transparency. If anyone is to blame it's the user (ie me)." (from the that thread)
