Does Familab want a bridgeport milling machine?
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:29:40 PM »
I might buy big a bridgeport vertical milling machine this weekend Saturday September 13th.  I know with Makerfair this weekend the timing couldn't be worse. Lol
I'd want to continue to own it, but put it in the lab for members to use as well, and the learning curve is super-super-easy compared to the HAAS CNC.
If I get it the mill:
1) Does anybody know a machinery moving resource that might cut a good deal for moving it from Tampa to Familab?
2) Does anybody know of a forklift around Longwood-ish or Orlando that could lift it off my flatbed trailer up into the lab?

The machine is about 2500 pounds or so.  7.5 feet tall, 4.5 feet wide, 4 feet deep.  Approximately. It runs off 3-phase 220 (208).  Digital read out, power feed, variable speed spindle.  It's pretty awesome...

I'm in favor -- a mill like that is one of the basic tools with which you can build, well, anything.  I believe Dave Woods has a forklift, but I don't know about transportation from Tampa.

I have a landscaping trailer and a truck.  So if they have a forklift on their end I'm good.  But if they dont,  I'll have to figure something out.  But if David woods has one, that opens up a lot of options.

I am in favor of this, but not this weekend.

Great news, the bridgeport-style milling is in the lab!!!!
It's placed back in the area defined for metalworking.  It's against the wall, opposite the front of the HAAS CNC, between the electrical panel and the metal-side pallet rack.
I had to move aroind many things to get it there, and I have returned all but the two wheeled shelving units to their original location... I have pushed my body to it's absolute physical limit today and I will have to resume later with arranging things.

For the forklift help getting it off my trailer, the business next door to us to the left (the one with the wood plank ramp) worked for over an hour with the forklift.  They wouldn't take any money from me, and even declined wings and beer as well.  If you see their door open please take a moment and thank them yet again for their forklift help.

Here are some photos of the vertical milling machine.  It runs off of 220 3-phase electric, has a 2 horsepower motor, a 3-axis digital readout, power feed on the x-axis (table moving left-right), and a variable speed spindle.

Just saw this beast in the lab today. Anyone going to host a class on how to use this?

Yep, I'd very much like to get it sitting properly on the floor, hook up the electric correctly, get some tooling and a milling vice, and then lastly, put together a class and teach it for Familab.  Both for educating others, and for safety as well.

No firm date yet, but I believe February will be the first class.  The Bridgeport is off the pallet and on the floor, I have collets for it, we have end mills, and we have a vise for it now.  I have the class about half-written so far.  Electricity needs to hooked up to it to.
