New Laser Cutter Questions
« on: December 22, 2015, 12:51:30 AM »
Any advice about sheet metal or copper material that can be used with the laser cutter?

Generally, a 60watt machine like our Epilog will not cut metal.  With special techniques, it can mark metal, but the coatings to do that are relatively expensive.

EDIT: Split the topic for clarity.

Thank you!  How about leather?

It'll handle leather quite easily, just be sure to buy veggie tanned, not oil tanned. Petroleum tanned oil will char something fierce.
I like colors.

I have "mineral tanned" aka "chrome tanned"
Would it hurt the machine to try it?

Chrome tanned leather will release toxic vapors -- and the exhaust system isn't really designed for that.  Best to stick with vegetable tanned hides.

Oh, and one more note -- all synthetic leathers, "pleather" and the like, are PVC-based and warranty-voiding bad for the machine.  Don't even think about it!

A little on-line research indicates that mineral-tanned/chrome-tanned IS oil-tanned.  So I'll look for veggie-tanned.  Thanks for your help!
