Buildout Progress - Master Thread
« on: March 03, 2014, 11:47:16 AM »
So Dave Woods and I were able to sit down and hammer out some more details for the build out space. Below is the latest drawing. We decided to really increase the size of the rooms, to make things less cramped, and use some space that was otherwise unclaimed. It will increase the overall cost minimally, but will do a lot to add space.  Feel free to ask any questions if you need help identifying things.

How much space is left before the pallet racks? I can't picture the bay accurately enough to measure.

Sounds like a good idea.

The pallet racks will come up almost to the edge of the biohacking space. This will leave 6-7' of clearance, like a hallway/walkway.

FYI, we were going to vent the laser out of the same wall as the door is on. There will be two 4" stacks running up the outside of the room, to the extraction fans. This should help keep noise down in the classroom, by moving it as far over as possible.

A very nice setup.  Are there provisions for a safelight circuit in the darkroom space?  (and an "in use" light outside?)

I second the use of an "IN USE" light outside. We've built one for the bathroom, we should be able to do it again, with inverted logic.
I like colors.

So in another three weeks the laser cutter arrives and when it does Pat is going to setup a futon  in the lab and start camping the laser. It looks like the plans are in order. Do we have a build of materials, sufficient funds?

What do we need to get started? If someone has all this planned out, drop the information in the forms with some build dates. I am sure I'm not the only person ready to help.

I second Simply7's concern for timeframe. Who is taking lead on buying supplies? What date can we all come in and make the rooms?

Are there any plans for windows in any of these rooms(darkroom excluded)? Or perhaps in-door windows? It would be useful to know how many people are in a room without opening the room, especially for biohacking, and would be useful for tours.
yes.

Yes, Dave Woods and I have already discussed that. We have a few options that we are looking at, but still need to obtain both light fixtures. We've talked about permanent type lights vs ones that can plug into an outlet. Either way, there will be a switched circuit for that light.

We do not have a BOM yet, DW and I are still working on plans. Its VERY important to have a nearly complete set of plans before we start on this, as this is a significant build-out that needs to last.
Concerning money, we do have a good chunk of change to start, but it will not cover everything, as we have to pay people to install fire sprinklers, and some other things.

Simply7, I appreciate your offer to help, and we'll be posting build dates on the forums soon. To get started, we need just a little more time to finalize plans and materials, then i'll make an order for them instead of buying from home depot - much less expensive and those companies will deliver the materials to our dock, rather than David attempting to get 16' pieces of lumber in his car/trailer. :)

John, I am taking the lead on supplies and the lab's cooperation with Dave Woods and the other specialty contractors. I don't have a final date yet, but will work this week on coming up with one. The framing, electrical, plumbing, etc will all be roughed in first, and then we'll do all the finishing (drywall, outlets, lights, ventilation) on the laser room before the others, since there is an immediate need for that.

The laser room is slated to get a very large window on the "right" side of the drawing, leading into the main warehouse space. We could look at windows in the doors, but doors with windows do cost a bit more. The biohacking room really doesn't have the provisions for a window, the only wall that is really open faces the pallet racks. I think we'll look into a door/window option for this one.

Re: cashflow.

So we have on the books about $5000 dedicated to this project that is not in general funds. From the donor, this must include a lab fridge for the biohacking space. This, plus the fans and ventilation stacks required for the laser, along with a few other necessities, will take a big dent out of the money for general construction.

We as the board, have talked about using general (non-dedicated) funds to pay for some of the buildout. This has not been confirmed, but it has been discussed. Even with that, not dipping into general funds or savings/reserves is important for the safety of our finances.

Given that, we will still need to outfit the rooms with cabinets, shelves, light fixtures, flooring, etc, all of which has been part of our design process, but needs additional funding. We will not be able to complete these rooms from the original $5000 donation, but will get close.

If anyone else wishes to donate specifically to the buildout funds, please paypal treasurer@familab.org(or contact that email address for alternate payment methods.)

This is down in the details, but I don't want to forget it so I'm going to dump it here. Would it be helpful to add small screens on the walls next to each new room with a schedule of upcoming reservations? I noticed MakerWorks uses an appointment scheduling system for their laser time from SuperSaaS. We could probably build something like that, but their pricing is reasonable and it is turnkey. If we could have small screens with an RFID reader or even a touch screen, then people could reserve time on the spot too. Just thinking ahead, as I know the laser will be a hot item. Maybe we could integrate it with iShortbus' system to check if they've taken the laser class, etc.
