Desklamp project feedback/ideas
« on: May 04, 2015, 03:10:14 PM »
Hi all. I am in the process of posting full build instructions for intro to intermediate maker projects on my robot50.org site. This past weekend I put together a simple desk lamp project that uses an Altoids tin and a nut can among other things. I hope it will be a good introductory level project for aspiring makers. I would appreciate any feedback you all have on the project post as well as ideas for adding functionality to future versions. Should I put in a USB charger? Alarm clock?  Bench top power supply? what would you find useful? The project page is at http://robot50.org/projects/desk-lamp-01/

Your desk lamp is very cool. I like the materials you used.

As for added functionality, a dual port USB charger would be nice, and perhaps a lower light setting for when you don't need all of the LEDs going. Perhaps make them dimmable? Another idea is make a smaller one that can be clamped onto the top of a LCD monitor or laptop display and can be plugged into a USB port? Just ideas.

Great project, love the reuse of common items.

FYI - Some of the pics aren't showing for me.

I'd like to see a method to create a removable weight - perhaps a slightly smaller diameter can, or a slug of the resin mixture that could be placed inside so that I could upgrade wiring, etc. over time.

Very nice tutorial! I think a USB charger would be fantastic. Maybe make the lights RGB with a little wheel on the side for changing the color?

That's a great writeup and nice design. Everyone has already made great suggestions, but I will toss in make it touch to power and dim.

Thanks for the responses. I will do a USB charger version for sure. I just need to find a module that plays nice with Iphones. I will also build a deluxe version for my electronics desk that has a second neck for a fume extractor and a bench top power supply in a larger base.  Some interesting other ideas to think about.
