Project Strandbeest: All Strandbeest All the Time
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:09:44 PM »
Idea:
I was first introduced to strandbeests (beach animals), autonomous walking sculptures created by Theo Jansen, by tetsuharu in the FamiLAB IRC channel one night while discussing possible projects. Instantly enamored by the idea, I began researching them and for the next week researched and collaborated with members on the IRC channel to design a 3D model to be printed on my school's 3D printer (uPrint SE). Meanwhile, I also considered creating a fullscale model to present at OMMF while tetsuharu considered a papercraft version employing my research and collaboration. All 3 projects are now underway and hope to be completed by May 26th.

Planned:
  • Full scale wind-powered PVC strandbeest
  • 3D model printed from ABS plastic. Computer models to be released on Thingiverse upon completion of the large-scale build.
  • Papercraft model in collaboration with tetsuharu
Possible Additions:
  • Wind-storage system to allow for autonomy on the full-scale build
  • A propeller add-on for the 3D model to allow wind-power.
  • Largescale production of the 3D model, to be sold at OMMF
  • Papercraft kits to be given away at OMMF
Progress:

3/20:
Documentation begun.
Large scale build awaiting funding (applied for Makership with OMMF). joints, crankshaft and carrier need to be designed.
3D models nearing completion, hoping for first print by Monday 3/26.
Papercraft linkages designed, carrier and crankshaft need to be designed. Awaiting purchase of heavier paper to continue testing.

3/21
Funding get! $200 towards the full scale beest. LET THE DESIGNING BEGIN!

3/22
Printbeest put on hold
FamiBEEST PVC dimensioned and priced out, $80. Leaves $120 for joints and extraneous costs

3/29
FamiBEEST rebudgeted, supplies purchased. 600 feet of PVC awaits shaping!

4/3
Dude I've got 600 feet of PVC let's get this show on the ROAD.

This sounds like a blast. If you need any help let me know. I'm not good at CAD design or anything but I'm good with my hands and can think through mechanical stuff pretty well.

We mapped out and laser cut a small papercraft leg already. I'd share files, but Aberro here doesn't want to release it until it's fully functional and we have awesome pictures.

I will try to be at the lab as much as I can in the next two months, any help I can get while working on this is appreciated. I want to totally price it out tomorrow now that I've got a good understanding of how everything will work and once I've got that breakdown I can start buying supplies.

Have you completed this project yet?  If yes, when are going to release it?
