A Late Introduction
« on: January 15, 2014, 03:46:15 PM »
Hello, my name is Calvin(a nickname I have been given is Kelly) and I heard about FamiLAB through a coworker named John. I don't know his last name, but at the time I worked with him he had green hair. Anyways he introduced me to this place and it pretty much caught my attention.

I visited an open house sometime last year( maybe in November or October) and got to tour around the place and see all the equipment. I am an artist that graduated from Flagler College with a BA in Fine Arts and minor in Illustration. For sometime I have been looking for studio space and FamiLAB is ideal because of the 24/7 access and the fact that you all have a screen printing machine and laser cutter.

It is my intention to use the space for making silk screen prints and posters (possible shirts) and crafting boxes and other wooden objects. Also, I wouldn't mind learning programming as I have always had an interest in the gaming community and the desire to create video games, in particular app games. I noticed that classes can be taught by members and I wouldn't be opposed to teaching various art crafts like drawing or printing if their is an interest.

Hope this introduction is helpful and look forward to meeting everyone!.. and also being a member one day! Thanks for your time and have a great day.

I'm game for some craft classes.
Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.

Welcome! I think I know the John you're talking about, with crafting and green hair. :)  (Cope, are we talking about you here?)

I'd definitely be down for some more artsy classes.

We look forward to seeing you more around the space!

We are indeed talking about me there.

And I would love to take a class on printing. A year or two ago I laser etched wooden plates and tried my hand at printmaking, but I'd love to learn the ins and outs from a trained printer. I hope to see you around more Calvin!

It's the red machine on top of the shelves in the warehouse, on the side with the soldering bench.

Probably obvious, but if someone wants to use the screen printing machine, -please- move it off the top shelf before using it, for safety'

Welcome Calvin (Kelly),

There is so much potential at this lab. Get that screen printer off of the top shelf the next time you come in and see if everything is ready to roll er or scrape. You should get the screen printing going on, and put together an intro workshop? I'm sure many of us will be interested in a class.

We should do a design workshop that ultimately outputs silk screen, laser cut wood and laminate versions of some design work such as a logo. We could run an inkscape/illustrator class for the preliminary designs and follow up with each of the output classes. 4 classes could be done on a Saturday? If you like the idea let's talk and someone can propose it on the classes forum...

I've been using Illustrator for about eight years now, and if there's interest in a class on the closed-source design tool, I'd be happy to help put one together.
