Hi folks!
« on: February 05, 2014, 12:21:22 PM »
I hope to find this community active and engaging! :)
  • Why do you want to join FamiLAB?
To make friends and hang out with those who share similar interests.
  • How did you hear about us?
    http://bit.ly/1iquxyO
  • What interesting projects are you working on, or want to work on?
RC model mixed reality racing simulator, to be followed by a go-kart sized model w/ haptic feedback. Because real life Mario Kart.
I'm still in the planning/learning/acquisition phase. I've acquired a couple of Oculus Rifts and need to decide on a video capture solution. I'm hoping for video capture, image processing, rendering & networking to happen within real-time tolerance. Fat chance, right?  ;D
  • Anything else we should know?
I'm an "Automation Consultant" for some crazy Germs who either keep me really busy or leave me really bored. I'm fluent in most shell & scripting languages, most notably PowerShell. I dick about in C#/C++ and can get things done, but I'm not the greatest. I play Counter-Strike with vehemence... quite frequently. I went to FIT for CE and dropped out after a couple of years. As fate would have it, a VFX company landed in Port Saint Lucie and I learned my way into systems administration. When the company toppled over, I moved to VT for a year to work and learn to loathe winter. I currently live with a couple of hobbyist makers who venture on the artistic side. Oh yeah.. I used to run a web forums for defectors of G4TechTV's PC Gaming subforum during the takeover, desecration and eventual demise of TechTV. It was aptly known as "The Computer Forums" and then renamed "GigaYetti" some years later.

Hi Beth, I was working in Montpelier and living in Northfield... but I did go to a lakeside party in St Albans!  ;D It was a nice area.

Welcome!

Because real life Mario Kart.

WANT.

Thanks for the welcome, and ME TOO! I'm currently playing around with a couple of Logitech C270 cheapo web cams feeding each eye. Someone made this nifty solution called Ocucam and included the source: https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1234
I've found a couple of bugs... but it's a start! The next step is to detect & draw something on each frame per stream... probably going to use ARToolKit & OpenCV, but I need to read & learn more first. I can't wait to get past the rudimentary game engine part and on to the haptic stuff. I want to actuate a pneumatic piston to simulate a shell hitting you - something like a rubber foot that slams into the ground... and eventually I want to build engine management to create "limp" and "full throttle" modes for power-up items.
