Electronic music night
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:09:41 PM »
I started talking to one of the guys who was in the space for the game bash last weekend and we got the idea to set up a circuit bending and electronic music night. The idea would be to learn more about how electronic music is made and how it works, how to make those sounds with hardware, and how to use "found sounds" in your music. We were looking at a date in August some time. Anyone else interested?

Yes, and send Bill Riggins a PM on here. He's abyssknight. Just tell him when you know what day and time it will be, he'll put it on the FamiLAB calendar :D

We should talk. I've been trying to put together a "jam night" for some time now but find it difficult to gather up enough interest. My thought was to have two distinct "sections" of the lab set up.. one for "traditional" music (instruments and whatnot) and another for electronic music (basically what you're talking about, plus DJ equipment, FX, etc...) The goal would be for there to be some cross-over between the two sections as I'm sure many individuals are interested in both. For me the biggest problem was getting a good time set up. I didn't wan't to just set a date and see who shows up because that might just end up being me with my stage piano :P

You should wear a tux, Matt. And have a bottle of wine nearby as you serenade the empty lab.

Matt, I would totally be interested in doing a jam night at some point, independent of this electronic night and/or throwing the two together and seeing what we come up with. PM or email me and we'll get things started.

We need to invite back Joe from molyjam. Not a member, but did all the music for Jeremy's/his game, and it was awesome :D

I wish I could say that I'd join in on this, but as with Matt's attempts, my participation is entirely contingent on work/how my life is blowing up at the time. If it happens while I'm at the lab and nothing is more pressing, I'm there. :\

Pocky, if you're talking about Jay he's the guy I was talking to in the first place. He was at the game bash the other weekend. Nice guy, skinny, with big floofy hair?

Yep, I think I was thinking of the name of someone else who was there and my mind assigned it to him. Derp. That's awesome :D

I am in strong support of all the above. I think this should be at minimum a monthly night. Also I think the lab needs a synth / midi setup somewhere.

A synth setup would really be up to the individual I would think, given that most of them are just on a laptop. A way to patch in your setup to the lab music system would be really clutch.

I have an ANCIENT 76 key weighted digital MIDI piano (build date is 1984 I think). It's one of the first digital FM synth pianos. Last time I tried it the tones on the keyboard didn't work. I always used it as a midi controller so I never had need for the internal sounds. If we can find a home for it I would be happy to dedicate it to the lab as a controller. I need to dust it off and make sure the midi out still works though :)

Matt, I'm coming up on Tuesday for the monthly meeting and I'm bringing my bass. Everyone consider yourselves warned.

Isn't there a 1/8" plug for the sound system?  If you can get your output converted to a headphone jack (adapters/mixer/etc) you can get it into the sound system.
Note: To improve mood, administer chocolate.

We can get pretty much anything into the sound system. 1/8, 1/4, RCA, Optical, Bluetooth, Mind waves...
