quadcopter anyone?
« on: March 22, 2012, 10:07:06 AM »
I've been working on a quadcopter project using the open source code from multiwii.com but have had less then great luck, is anyone else working on a quadcopter who would want to share experience?

f00bard built one using the HoverFly board. He's had a few crashes, but its working great now.

I did hear about this from Thantik, but the hoverfly board was much too expensive for me.
the multiwii board is fairly simple. arduino + nintendo wii+ and nunchuck = flight board (around $45 using craigslist for wii parts)
plus I'm a huge open source fan

What's the status on that open-source hoverfly board? It sounded pretty neat, wonder if we can get some of those? I'd love to build a quad, and I like f00bard's design.

Here's the kit from Parallax: http://www.parallax.com/tabid/768/ProductID/799/Default.aspx

Last time I talked to Dan he was still working on cleaning up the code so they could release it, but he said there was already a lot going on in the Parallax forums.

Also I think if we had enough people interested and willing to chip in some dough for everything except the control boards, we could get some boards donated  ;)

I still need to buy some new motors for my setup, which may mean new ESCs and props, which means more money than I can spend right now :-[

I'd be down for that. Let's get a BoM together and figure out what we need tonight. Maybe we can group buy motors and such. $600 for a quad kit is just nuts.

did anyone get anywhere with the parralax project? id love to compare notes against my arduino based multiwii copter. i spent $200 on my motors and ESC, $150 on my Flight board and IMU, and mine is fairly well equipped (ACC, Gyro, Barometer, Magnetometer) I will be looking for a I2C GPs soon though.

Would also like to check out your hoverfly setup, i heard rumor that hoverfly got a sweet government contract recently.
