**$#&^$@# I ran a program I shouldn't have.
« on: September 04, 2014, 11:22:47 PM »
OK -- I made the unthinkable error of running a program I downloaded to watch the OSU-NAVY game last weekend.  I stopped in as it was installing but the damage was done.

Now my browsers (safari) and (Chrome) have been HACKED..  (U#$#N hackers...  So when I click an external link -- a new tab usually opens for an add someplace.  When I close a tab, I get a chance to take a survey in a new tab, claiming to be about the website I just closed.

And when I click a link internal to a site, it adds hyperlinks to certain words in the linked page.

Anybody know how I can rid myself of this?

OK -- It seems that I downloaded and installed "DownLite" when i was looking to watch the Navy game on line for free.

I've removed it, and things seem good to go!

Here is a link explaining what it was.

Run a scan with http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html (It's free) to make sure everything unwanted is gone. If you ever get in a situation where nothing seems to be able to get rid of it, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/ will sometimes work miracles.
